CASL Statutory Review Report Released

December 14, 2017
A series of recommendations to amend Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation were released by a parliamentary committee yesterday. The House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology presented its report entitled Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation: Clarifications are in Order to the House of Commons.
In the report, the Committee stated that:
"While improving guidance and education should be a priority moving forward, it can only achieve so much.
The Act and its regulations require clarifications to reduce the cost of compliance and better focus enforcement. Provisions defining "commercial electronic message," consent, and "business-to-business" messages, among others, warrant the attention of the Government of Canada. The Government will be in a better position to assess the impact of the coming into force of the private right of action once these clarifications are implemented."
We will comment on this report on our next AccessPrivacy monthly call on December 20, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. EST.  The call will focus on Emerging Themes and Trends in Cybersecurity - 2018 and Beyond and will feature a conversation with Kevin Mandia, Chief Executive Officer of FireEye, Inc.and founder of the cyber security consulting firm Mandiant, which merged with FireEye in 2013.
