The Ontario government introduced An Act to amend certain Acts with respect to electronic health records yesterday.  Among other things, this legislation:

  • Establishes privacy and security requirements for shared electronic health records;
  • Clarifies the authorities under which health care providers may collect, use and disclose personal health information in electronic health records;

The OPC released a position paper this morning entitled The Case for Reforming the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).  In the paper, the OPC concludes that "it is becoming increasingly clear that the balance intended by PIPEDA is no longer there...[and at] this stage in PIPEDA's evolution, incentives are needed to encourage organizations to build robust privacy compliance...".

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has just released a report entitled What an IP Address Can Reveal About You.  The report presents findings from an analysis conducted by the OPC's Technology Analysis Branch examining the privacy implications of IP addresses and other basic ISP subscriber data.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada ("OPC"), the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, as well as 17 other privacy regulatory authorities from around the world will be participating in the Global Privacy Enforcement Network's first annual international Internet Privacy Sweep.  For a set day during the week of May 6-12, each of the privacy regulatory authorities will designate individuals from their organization to search the Internet to assess privacy issues related to this year's theme, privacy practice transparency.
