Big Data & Analytics

Given the increasing focus on privacy and analytics within the global privacy arena, we wanted to highlight the discussion paper released yesterday by the Centre for Information Policy Leadership, entitled "Big Data and Analytics: Seeking Foundations for Effective Privacy Guidance."   The purpose of the paper is to assist organizations and policymakers with the development of a governance framework for the use of analytics that protects privacy and promotes innovative uses of big data. The paper sets out examples of big data and analytics, the associated challenges under current law, and a list of goals for effective guidance. Among other things, the paper states that guidance on big data and analytics must reflect the two-phased nature of analytic processes and emphasize the need to establish accountability through an internal privacy programme.
