A bill to amend the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) was re-introduced by the Government of Canada this afternoon. Bill C-12, the Safeguarding Canadians' Personal Information Act, implements the government's Response to the Report of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics issued in 2007. The Bill has not yet been posted but the CBC reports that it is identical to Bill C-29 introduced in May 2010.

In a recent finding, the OPC found that KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) failed to provide the complainant with access to his personal information collected and used in connection with flight travel. In addition, KLM failed to provide the complainant with information regarding the organization's policies and practices for the management of personal information.

The Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta issued a decision in United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 401 v. Alberta (Information and Privacy Commissioner), finding that portions of Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) are unconstitutional. The decision is significant as it calls into question the constitutional validity of similar privacy legislation at both the federal and provincial level.
